How to use the MOBI to EPUB converter
- Add your DRM-free .mobi or .azw files.
- Convert to EPUB.
- Copy the EPUB to your reader, import it into an app, or mail it to the address of your Kindle.
Why MOBI is a dead end
MOBI comes from Mobipocket and was the format of the first Kindles. Amazon stopped taking MOBI through Send to Kindle in 2022 in favour of EPUB, and readers from other makers never handled it well, so a library kept only in MOBI gets harder to use every year.
Many MOBI files made in the 2010s are dual files, holding an old MOBI 6 version and a newer KF8 version of the same book. When the KF8 part exists, calibre reads it and more of the formatting survives.
What ends up in the EPUB
Chapters, the contents list, the cover, bold and italic text and images move across, together with title, author and publisher. Kindle page numbers and popular highlights live outside the book file, so they are not included.
Books that only have the MOBI 6 layer had basic formatting to begin with and look plain as EPUB. They still read fine, and your reader’s font settings apply.
Server handling
calibre does the conversion on our server, so each book is uploaded over HTTPS and processed without network access.
The MOBI and the EPUB are deleted right after the converted file is returned to you.
Questions
Will my reading position transfer?
No. Reading position and highlights belong to the device or Amazon account, not to the book file, so the EPUB opens at the beginning.
What is the maximum file size?
Each book may be up to 95 MB. Most MOBI novels are a few megabytes at most, so the limit only matters for heavily illustrated titles.
Does this strip Kindle DRM?
No. Encrypted books are refused with an error. Only DRM-free files, for example from Project Gutenberg or bundles, convert.
Can I do a whole folder?
Yes. Drop it in; each book is handled in turn and can be saved together in a ZIP.
