ODT to DOCX

Your report was written in LibreOffice, but the client, the HR department or the journal wants a Word file. Converting the ODT here means LibreOffice, the program that wrote it, does the translation into DOCX, which keeps its own features intact more reliably than Word’s importer.

ODT · RTF · folders and pasted images work too

How to use the ODT to DOCX converter

  1. Select the ODT documents, or RTF files you want as DOCX.
  2. Convert to DOCX.
  3. Download and open the file in Word, Pages or Google Docs before you send it.

Export beats import

Word opens ODT files, but it interprets some LibreOffice features loosely, especially frames, custom list numbering and page styles. When LibreOffice exports to DOCX instead, it writes those features in Word’s own terms, so the recipient sees fewer surprises.

The DOCX is usually smaller than the ODT, because LibreOffice-specific settings and the preview thumbnail are left out.

What to review before sending

Text, styles, tables, images, footnotes, comments and pending revisions transfer, with author names on comments and tracked changes. Separate page styles in the ODT become section breaks in Word, so check that headers and footers still switch in the right places.

Fonts are not embedded. If you used a font the recipient does not have, such as one that ships only with Linux, Word substitutes another and some lines may wrap differently.

Upload and deletion

This conversion runs LibreOffice on our server, so the document is sent over HTTPS and processed in a sandbox without network access.

The ODT and the new DOCX are both deleted right after the result is returned to you; no copy is left waiting on disk.

Questions

Is there a limit on how many I convert?

Up to 40 server conversions fit in any ten-minute window. Past that the server asks you to pause for a minute; there is no daily total and no account.

Are Apache OpenOffice files supported?

Yes. OpenOffice saves standard ODT, and those documents convert the same way.

I have a Google Docs file. What now?

Download it as DOCX from Google Docs and you already have a Word file. Download as ODT only if you want LibreOffice to do the export here.

Do comments survive?

Yes. They become Word comments, and unaccepted revisions become tracked changes.
