FB2 to EPUB

FictionBook, or FB2, is the XML format behind many Russian and Eastern European online libraries, but most Western readers and apps do not open it. Converting to EPUB makes those books readable on Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and, through Send to Kindle, on a Kindle.

How to use the FB2 to EPUB converter

  1. Choose the .fb2 files. If they came as .fb2.zip, extract them first with our archive tools.
  2. Convert to EPUB.
  3. Copy the EPUB to your reader, add it to your app, or mail it to the Kindle’s Send to Kindle address.

From one XML file to an EPUB

An FB2 book is a single XML document holding the text, a description block and images encoded as base64. calibre splits its sections into EPUB chapters, decodes the pictures and turns the description into metadata: title, author, series, language and annotation.

Cyrillic text, verse, epigraphs and notes are preserved. Notes become linked footnotes, so tapping a note number on your reader jumps to the note, and the FB2 cover becomes the EPUB cover.

Getting it onto a Kindle

Kindles cannot read FB2, but Send to Kindle takes EPUB, so emailing the converted book to your Kindle address is enough. For a USB copy, run the EPUB through the EPUB to AZW3 page as well.

Older FB2 files are sometimes saved in Windows-1251 rather than UTF-8. The encoding is declared in the file header and read correctly, so Cyrillic letters do not come out as question marks.

Upload and deletion

calibre runs on our server, so each FB2 is uploaded over HTTPS and converted without network access.

The FB2 and the EPUB are deleted right after the converted file is returned to you.

Questions

Are FB2 books stored on your server?

No. Each FB2 exists on our server only while calibre converts it, and it is removed together with the EPUB once the result is sent back.

Will series information show in my library?

Yes. The series name and number from the FB2 description are written into the EPUB metadata, so readers that group books by series can use them.

What about FBZ or FB3?

This page takes plain .fb2 only. An FBZ is just a compressed FB2: unpack it and convert the file inside. FB3 cannot be converted.

Can I go from EPUB back to FB2?

Yes, choose FB2 as the target on the ebook converter page.
