How to use the RAR to 7Z converter
- Select the RAR files you want to move off the proprietary format.
- Type the RAR password if one is set; under More settings you can give the 7Z its own password.
- Press Convert to 7Z, then download each 7Z or all of them as one ZIP.
An open home for old archives
7Z compresses about as well as RAR and often slightly better, so archives stay small after the move. The size typically lands within a few percent of the original RAR, and at Maximum or Ultra it can come out smaller.
Maximum is preselected because people archiving records usually care about space. The encoder works single-threaded inside the browser tab, so a 1 GB RAR may need a few minutes at Maximum; Normal or Fast finishes sooner.
Keeping records confidential
RAR5 and 7Z both use AES-256. Set a password here and the 7Z encrypts its header too, the same effect as RAR's "encrypt file names" option, so the list of documents stays hidden.
RAR-only extras with no 7Z counterpart, such as recovery records and the archive comment, get left behind.
Converting a shelf of old RARs
Add every RAR from an archive drive in one go. Each becomes a 7Z with the same base name, and the size before and after is listed beside it, so you can confirm the move did not cost storage.
Keep the original RARs until you have opened a few of the new 7Z files and checked that the documents inside are complete.
Questions
Are solid RARs supported?
Yes. Solid and non-solid archives in both RAR4 and RAR5 format are read.
What about multi-volume RAR sets?
They are not supported; only single-file RAR archives can be converted.
What opens the resulting 7Z?
7-Zip, PeaZip, Keka, The Unarchiver, Windows 11 File Explorer and WinRAR itself, so nobody who could read the old RAR is locked out.
